Yancy Camp Workout 376
Here’s to a great week of training! As some of you have probably figured out, I’m very passionate about serving our youth. I’ve been coaching and mentoring youth for a long time and as many of you know, many of the challenges we deal with when working with youth stem from parenting methods. I have started a consulting business that aims to help moms and dads raise kids who are prepared to tackle life with a positive uplifting attitude filled with a desire to provide acts of service to others and a life filled with great purpose. Yesterday I made a post on my personal Facebook page that was directed to the community where I live. I work with a lot of youth and parents in my area. I’ve attached the text below (after the workout). As I get older I find myself with the desire to be more direct (graciously direct I hope) when it comes to trying to serve others. I want to leave a legacy of being a man who did everything he could to serve as many as possible. I’ve had so many in my life pour their heart and soul in to helping serve me and I simply have a great desire to serve the next in line. Thank you for taking the time to read and follow what I have to say and I thank each and every one of you for allowing me to be a small part of your life. Love you big from Austin TX 🙂

*Below when I say “please read the attached article”, I’m referring to the article I shared (The Most Physically and Mentally Unhealthy Generation In History) on my personal Facebook page on Saturday Oct 7th. It can be found on www.breakingmuscle.com (keyword search “unhealthy”.
“Parents, please read the attached article. During and after reading, take an honest assessment of how you’re raising your kids. As a coach, it’s not uncommon to have my 50-60+ year old clients running circles around many of the MS-HS age youth that show up for my boot camp and OCR workouts. High five for the parents and youth for trying to take steps to fix the problem but we need to take steps to help reduce the causes of the problem. I worked in the corporate world for many years where I hired, mentored, counseled, and fired many over the years. I can’t count the number of times I hired college educated individuals who were a mental and physical train wreck. I hate to use such a strong term but it’s 100% accurate. I also had many darn good ones but so much of what this article talks about absolutely sets a foundation for struggle in life far beyond the 0-18 years when little Johnny and Jane are in the comfort of mom and dad.
I had an advantage growing up. I lived on a farm and had parents who taught me the value of a hard days work, how to bust your ass every day to ensure you never had to stand in the unemployment line. I remember being terrified of that line. I 100% understand how it can be harder to create situations for your kids to have opportunities to work and earn their keep when you live in the city. I was on hundreds of acres with animals, I played all sports, and my jobs from about 5-18 included farming, hauling hay, chopping and selling wood, washing dishes, restaurant cook, working in the butcher shop at a grocery store, and data processing for the emergency room where my dad worked. Some of these amazing opportunities aren’t available for someone living in the city but we have to get creative as parents.
I don’t tell you my story to get a pat on the back. I tell you my story because now I understand it from the other side. My wife and I live in Cedar Park TX (aka Pleasantville) and we have to get creative to ensure our kids stay active and live what we consider a productive childhood that will prepare them for life past 18.
Don’t cater to your kids. Don’t cook special meals for your kids. Stop doing that! Stop!!! Stop putting them on a pedestal. Stop worrying about all the dangers and encourage them to play team sports. Speak highly of those 5am wake up calls for 6am practices and definitely don’t let them quit once they’ve made a commitment unless there is a very serious issue. Tell them what I tell them “it’s the best internship of your young career”. Tell them it’s not about them but what they can provide for the team. It’s good for them to feel the nervous jitters that come from competing and the physical and mental struggle of a tough team workout or a hard days work. Don’t bring them special food when they are stuck at a place and don’t like what’s being served. Don’t save them unless it’s an emergency. Don’t scramble around town like a spider monkey with a crash pad for them to fall on when they forget things. Let them fall! Let them get counseled, let them be coached, educated, and counseled by imperfect people. Until they decide to start their own business and hire no one, they will be working with a lot of imperfect people once they leave the house.
You want to know one of the reasons why obstacle course racing is so wildly popular and has been the fastest growing sport 7-8 years in a row? Because the young people in this country all have a desire to use their mind and bodies to work hard and conquer challenges. For many the sport has provided them with their first opportunity to truly get outside of their comfort zone and they freaking love it. They can’t get enough of it. It provides them with a reason to train the body and they can’t wait for their next race.
I love all humans and nothing hits my heart and inspires me more than working with our youth. Parents, do not beat yourself up if you feel you should have done better up to this point. We can start making changes now. If anyone out there would like to sit down and talk about a plan or would like advice in this area, please let me know. I can help you and your family. It’s never too late.
Love you big ????”
