Daily Necessity Run

In parts of the world, there are cultures that run daily for necessity and this “necessity run” has helped build many great runners. Most of our lives don’t require necessity running but I use this to create a training opportunity for the top level athletes I train and I want to add this to your daily routine. Currently I have most of my top level athletes running three miles daily at aerobic training zone pace (ATZ) and I encourage them to wrap their mind around what a necessity run means. There are people at various places across the globe who run to work, to school, to the market, to get water, etc. This run is on top of all the training you do each day. Three miles may be to much for you right now and in this case, there’s nothing wrong with starting with one or two miles or 2/3/4 kilometers. As you’ve seen, I normally program runs around time instead of mileage/kilometers. In this case I want you to run a certain distance. Make this run a daily part of your life. If you can work some of them in to you life to where you’re actually accomplishing something with the run other than training, that would be even better. My daughter’s school is 1.5 miles from our house and there are days when I’ll run beside her as she rides her bike and then I run home. Some days, this is my three mile “necessity run”. I’d like for you to go with ATZ pace and track your heart rate if possible. What you’re going to see if the total time it takes to complete the run drop and eventually, we can start increasing the daily run distance. We’re getting outside of the box here and I’m confident you’ll enjoy the results. I’d love to hear from you about how you create your daily “necessity run” so shoot me a message when you get a chance. From my family to yours, have a wonderful Christmas and Holiday Season. Much love from the Culp’s in Austin Texas.
